Little European Waltz
Someone played the piano.
Someone played the violin.
Pretty soon the neighbors would wander in.
And soon they’d all be swaying to a Little European Waltz.
Out would come the candles.
Down would come the window shades.
Miss Eliza’s kids peeked through the balustrades, all her grades.
The air was rife with music from that Little European Waltz.
And as the skies grew darker, their smiles were filled with light
They danced, entranced, enchanted, cradled by the night.
Daniel saw Eliza. She was looking at him too.
Falling neath the spell was all that they could do. And so would you.
And then they started dancing to that Little European Waltz.
A tune from cross the ocean. Some sailor’s souvenir.
Carried by an east wind to blossom over here.
Daniel wed Eliza That was 1891.
My mother was their grandchild later on.
And so I think about them when I play this European waltz.
