Out on the Street
Oh, the winter wind sweeps the city clean.
Just blocks and blocks with nothin’ in between.
But in the dark some do survive
It’s a bitter night and their only wish is to stay alive.
I never thought I’d be like them
My hopes were high but here I am.
Had a lumber yard job, big stacks of wood
One came tumblin’ down. And it got me bad. It got me good.
Now I’m out on the street.
Dangers all around me
Human misery surrounds me
I’ve got nothin’ to eat.
On the Street.
Ain’t no consolation
In a rich and healthy nation
When you’re out on the street.
Old lullaby wind comes from the west
It calls to you, “Come slumber on my breast”.
There’s many a child may never wake
And who’s to blame when a human being gets an unfair shake?
I wrote to my wife and my kids back home.
That letter came back “address unknown”.
Did they follow me here to this big town
No place to live and the mercy mission has been shut down.
Are they out on the street?
Dangers all around them
Human misery surrounds them
Nothin’ to eat.
On the Street.
Ain’t no consolation
In a rich and healthy nation
When you’re out on the street.
Are they out on the street?
Dangers all around you
Human misery surrounds you
You’ve got nothin’ to eat.
On the Street.
Ain’t no consolation
In a rich and healthy nation
When you’re out on the street.
