Thankin' All the Stars
Oh, it’s 4 o’clock in the morning.
I’m stumblin’ through the dark,
Wonderin’ where I parked.
I’ve been worryin’ the whole night through.
I’ve been thinkin’ ‘bout the planet – as bad as it can get.
Now I’m thankin’ all the stars it hasn’t happened yet.
It’s a pretty clear night for a Friday
Clearer than my head
And all the stuff we said.
None of us were makin’ sense.
Philosophy in bars – logic gone astray.
Here I am thankin’ all the stars that, for now, we’re OK.
I was imaginin’ 90 years ago
Everythin’ was easy. Life was real slow.
Who knew then where things would go
And would it have made a difference?
Meanwhile, here by the highway,
There’s an awful lot of air
In the sky up there.
Makes me wanna fly away.
I think about our leaders standin’ outside too.
Are they thankin’ all the stars for the vision to pull through?
Or do they look skyward, trembling with fright,
Fearful of the future, cryin’ in the night?
Meanwhile in the heavens universes explode,
Systems slowly orn while others erode.
Look there’s Mercury and Venus, Saturn and Mars.
I’m prayin’ to the planets, prayin’ to the stars.
. . . . . .
I was imaginin’ I was some big wheel,
Sittin’ in a big meetin’, makin’ a big deal.
When along came somethin’ s mjuch more real:
This pinin’ in my heart for you.
. . . . . . .
I should mind my own business
They don’t need me so
If I can just find my keys, promise I’ll drive home real slow.
