The Good Samaritan
Walking down the street was a stranger
And he was set upon by a band of thieves.
Lying there, his lifeblood dripping away
Lying there for all the world to see.
And a preacher came past
And a businessman too
But they just walked on by
And now I’m asking you
“Which man? Which was neighbor?”
And I ask you, “Which man? Which was a friend?”
Can you tell me, “Which man did a stranger a favor?
Friend to the end.
The preacher said, “Son, do you believe?
If you don’t your soul is damned.”
And the businessman said, “You got any money?
If you don’t, I can’t lend you a hand.”
And many people came by,
But they just stepped around
That stranger
Lying there on the ground
Won’t you tell me
“Which man? Which was neighbor?”
And I ask you, “Which man? Which was a friend?”
Let me ask you, “Which man did a stranger a favor?
Friend to the end.
Then a woman came by. A Good Samaritan woman.
She picked the man up, carried him to her bed.
She washed his wounds with tears from her eyes.
Dried them with the hairs from her head.
Somewhere there’s a lonely stranger
Lying on the cold, cold ground.
He may be asleep or he may be bleeding
He may not be able to utter one sound.
Why don’t you go, go and do likewise
For all of God’s creatures,
No matter what their distressing disguise.
And tell me
“Which man? Which was neighbor?”
Tell me, tell me, “Which man? Which was a friend?”
And I’m asking, “Which man did a stranger a favor?
Friend to the end.
