Touch Your Heart

One day I went down into the subway.
It looked bad. It smelled bad. The sign said “Please don’t spit”.
I shut myself off from experiencing any of it.
But, then, like a colored cloud floating down from heaven,
(On a scale from one to ten, this was an eleven.)
Someone was playing the trumpet in the face of Armageddon.
The sound was so rich. The tone was so pure.
It was more beauty than my poor heart could endure.
The tears rolled down my cheeks and I just let ‘em.
Just when you think you stand apart
Somethin’ will steal right up and touch your heart.
One day I was in a town down south.
I heard them first, like echoes down a valley:
A couple of kids and their mom comin’ toward me down the alley.
Then a spied this little girl frolickin’ and skippin’
Spring was in the air. Hummingbirds were zippin’.
But what was she doin’? Picking through the garbage, laughin’ and a-runnin’
Yes, she was laughin’ like she was chasin’ butterflies, but here’s a switch:
She was laughin’ like she had a new toy if she had been born rich.
And that was all it took for those tears to start comin’.
Just when you think you stand apart
Something will steal right up and touch your heart.
One day we were sittin’ and talkin’, you and I.
Talkin’ just like friends talk about the weather.
Talkin’ ‘bout the world, talkin’ ‘bout each other.
Suddenly I knew how much I adore you.
Just when you think you stand apart,
Somethin’ will steal right up and touch your heart.
Just when you think that you’re so smart,
Someone will steal right up and touch your heart.
