Annie Looks Down

And Annie looks down
From the mountain where her father brought his children,
Down at the mining town that mothered her for years.
And Annie looks up at the dirt road,
That leads to the highway,
That leads to the future.
What’s that got to do with her?
Things gotta get better than what thehy were.
And Annie looks down
At the city street that tempted off her husband,
Down at her several children playing in the sun.
And Annie walks over to a magazine
That’s open to an article
That tells about the future
That’s gotta be better than what she’s goin’ through.
Annie, whatcha doin’?
You wanna move on but you’re tired of movin’.
Annie, where’s that sparkle that you had as a child
And who’s that toldja that sedative’s mild?
And Annie looks down at the railroad schedule that she is clutchin’
Down at the list of towns that catches in her throat.
And Annie looks up at the station clock,
Especially at the second hand
That’s eatin’ up the future
That’s gotta be better than what she’s goin’ through.
